1978 Fender Mustang Antigua
Share
For a short time in the late 70's, Fender manufactured the Fender Mustang, and Mustang Bass with Antigua finishes. The majority of these examples I have seen have been from 1977 and 1978. I recently purchased this exceptionally clean 1978 Fender Mustang in Antigua from an estate in Pennsylvania. The guitar is remarkably well preserved for its age and includes its original hang tags. Also included were the original hang tags from a Fender Champ amplifier that was purchased around the same time, but was sold prior to the guitar.

Fender Mustang History
The Fender Mustang was introduced in 1964. Despite being marketed toward students, the Mustang developed a loyal following and remains one of Fender's most popular offset designs today.
The Mustang saw relatively few changes during the 1960s. Early examples had L-Series neck plates, and smaller headstocks. During the CBS era, changes were made gradually, including larger headstocks, F stamped neck plates, and different finish options.
By 1978, the Mustang was nearing the end of its original production run. Production numbers were significantly lower than models such as the Stratocaster and Telecaster. The Mustang would remain in the Fender catalog until the early 1980s before being discontinued.
Fender Antigua Finish
The most interesting feature of this 1978 Mustang is its original Antigua finish.
Antigua first appeared during the second half of the 1970s and remains one of the most distinctive finishes Fender ever offered. The finish features a gray-to-green burst effect that is immediately recognizable. People's opinions of the finish are quite divided. Some despise it, while others love it. Today, original Antigua examples often attract significantly more interest than standard finishes from the same period.

Original Fender Hang Tags
This Mustang retains its original Fender hang tags, which survived nearly fifty years with the guitar, which is part of what drew me to it initially. Most hang tags were discarded shortly after purchase, making them difficult to find today. What makes this group particularly interesting is that the original tags from a Fender Champ amplifier were also preserved. It is easy to imagine the original owner walking into a Pennsylvania music store in 1978 and leaving with a complete Fender setup consisting of a Mustang and a Champ.

1978 Fender Mustang Authentication
Upon receiving this guitar I disassembled it to confirm its authenticity. I was thrilled to find everything I was expecting. The serial number on the headstock matched the serial number on the back of the pickguard. The grey-bottom pickups with plastic leads, and pots dating to the 21st week of 1978 all confirmed its originality.

How Much is a 1978 Fender Mustang Worth?
The value of a 1970s Fender Mustang depends on originality, finish color, condition, and provenance. Antigua examples typically command a premium over more common finishes due to their collectibility and limited production. Original hang tags and other case candy can further increase desirability among collectors.
